Today your adventure begins. Upon arriving at the Paine Grande sector, you will start the hike to the Grey sector. The trek takes place through a narrow, winding valley that leads to Laguna Los Patos. As you progress, you will begin to see the imposing Southern Ice Field, as well as icebergs floating in Lake Grey. After passing a viewpoint that can be particularly windy, the trail descends through a mountain forest until it reaches the Grey refuge. From there, you can continue walking for an additional 10 minutes to the Grey Glacier Viewpoint, where you will come face to face with one of the arms of the majestic Southern Ice Field. At the end of the day, you will enjoy dinner at the refuge.
For an unforgettable view of the Gray Glacier, this day you can reserve about 3 – 4 hours in the morning (round trip) past the refuge in the direction of the famous Puentes Colgantes. It is the best viewpoint of the Glacier. In addition, you will can contemplate the impressive ice, you can see the depths of the ravines formed by the rivers and waterfalls that come from the Cordón Olguín. If you are lucky, you will be able to see ice slides from the Glacier into the cold waters of Grey Lake. In the afternoon you can do some of the activities such as walking on ice or kayak.
Get an early morning start for an all-day hike to the core of the park. After breakfast, request your box lunch and prepare yourself for a day of jaw-dropping Patagonian landscapes. Travel through barren lands and bordering the enchanting blue waters of the Skottsberg lake. After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, you will arrive to the Italiano campsite, where you will begin your journey up to the French Valley.
Climb through the immense rocky terrain and continue until you reach the French plateau, where you will be rewarded with impressive landscapes of Los Cuernos, turquoise glacial lagoons and wonderful hanging snowdrifts that fall like waterfalls along the east side of Paine Grande mount (3.050 mts). If you are lucky, you will hear the water rumbling and the thundering sound of water and ice crushing down! It is also a point where avalanches can be commonly observed. This is the ideal time to take some photographs and enjoy your box lunch, all before descending back to the Italiano campsite and finally return to Paine Grande. At 6:35 pm you must take the catamaran that will take you back to Pudeto, where you will take on the regular bus at 7:15 pm back to Puerto Natales. The estimated time of arrival to Natales is 9:30 pm.
