The route passes through beautiful Patagonian landscapes until it reaches the Pudeto sector, where you will take the catamaran that will take you to Paine Grande. From this point, the hike begins through a narrow, winding valley that leads to Los Patos Lagoon. As you progress, you will begin to appreciate sections of the imposing Southern Ice Field, as well as the icebergs floating in Lake Grey. After passing a viewpoint that can be particularly windy, the trail descends through a mountain forest until it reaches the Grey refuge. From there, you can continue walking for an additional 10 minutes to the Grey Glacier Viewpoint, where you will come face to face with this majestic blue ice massif.A
Enjoy breakfast in the dining room of the refuge and do not forget to ask for your box lunch. In case you did not get a chance to visit the hanging bridges the afternoon before, you can take the morning to go and explore the spectacular panoramic views of the Grey glacier.
This day, you will follow the same path as yesterday to go back to Paine Grande refuge. Rest and enjoy dinner in the dining room of the refuge.
For an unforgettable panoramic view of Grey glacier, set off for an extra 3 – 4 hrs (round trip) past the refuge in the direction of the famous hanging bridges. It is by far the best lookout of the glacier. In addition to contemplating the impressive ice, you can see the depth of the ravine formed by the rivers and waterfalls that come from the Olguín Range. If luck is on your side, you may catch ice calving into the deep, freezing waters of Grey lake.
On today’s walk you will travel to the core of the park, skirting the blue waters of the Skottsberg lake. After approximately 2.5 hours of walk, you will arrive to the Italiano camp (park rangers), where you will begin your journey to the French Valley. Climb large rocks and then continue through the forest until you reach the French plateau. Here, you will be rewarded with incredible views of Los Cuernos, turquoise glacial lagoons and astonishing hanging glaciers that tumble down the east face of Paine Grande Mountain (3.050 m.a.s.l.). If you are lucky, you can hear the loud noise of the glacier and the falling water, as well as it is very common to be able to witness an avalanche. Enjoy your box lunch and the well-deserved rest. Then you will continue your walk to Los Cuernos or Francés refuge, where you will have dinner and rest.
Enjoy your breakfast and then request your box lunch. During today’s hike you will pass through beautiful crystalline streams and you will be able to admire the hanging glaciers from Almirante Nieto mount at 2,670 meters, see the majestic condors gliding from the heights and go bordering the fascinating waters of the Nordenskjöld lake. Continue along the trail until you reach Torre Central refuge, where you can relax and enjoy dinner.
After breakfast in the refuge, ask for your box lunch and get ready for the adventure! Today’s hike begins through the Ascencio Valley, enjoying its extensive forests. During the final ascent, you will go through an immense field of giant rocks until you reach one of the most emblematic viewpoints in the world, the famous Base of the Towers lookout. At an altitude of 900 meters above the sea level, marvel at the 3 granite towers (north, central and south) and the sparkling turquoise glacial lake at its feet. Take some beautiful photos and enjoy your box lunch before following the same path back to the Torre Central refuge. Upon arrival you must take the “Las Torres” shuttle at 7:00 pm that will take you from the Visitor’s Center to Laguna Amarga and then take the regular bus at 7:45 pm that will take you back to Puerto Natales. The estimated arrival time to Natales is 9:30 pm.
