Hike ends at the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) where we watch the sunset as if we were truly on the surface of the moon. Transfer back to San Pedro de Atacama.
Accommodation at the Terra Luna Atacama hotel (or similar accommodation depending on availability).
After having a free morning, we will visit Pukara de Quitor: ruins of a pre-Columbian fort strategically located on the banks of the San Pedro River which once established the military and commercial control of the oasis. We will continue the river until we reach Catarpe, where we will begin our walk along the ravine that was inhabited by natives.
* The riverbed will be used on some occasions as a trail, bring sandals.
Accommodation in CAMP (approx. 2.700 meter above seal level).
On our second day of our walking, we will continue along the canyon that shows us its geological past in many colors in its rocks. We will pass through an old abandoned mine.
When we begin to pass through a cactus cord, it is because we are approaching agricultural land in the town of Rio Grande, where we will spend the night.
Accommodation in CAMP (approx. 2.700 meter above seal level).
We will continue slowly to the plateau while gaining altitude. Our way leads us to abandoned farmer homes and through agricultural terraces. Finally we arrive at the source of the river in a sector of wetlands known as “bofedal”. These high moors are the habitat of many Andean birds and the vegetation is highly appreciated by the “llamas” of the nearby village of Machuca. Tonight we camp at the village, which has an attractive colonial church.
