Climate in Patagonia: unpredictable and unpredictable

Clima en la Patagonia impredecible y azaroso

The diversity of landscapes, large lakes, proximity to the sea, presence or absence of the Andes Mountains, among other factors, make the Chilean Patagonia has different microclimates depending on where you are, for this reason, Vertice Travel advises visitors to be prepared to face differences in temperatures, strong winds, rain or snow.

Traveling south, the first corners of Chilean Patagonia welcome visitors with a semi-arid climate, where the Andes Mountains directly border the Pacific Ocean and there is a large presence of lakes. This means that cities such as Chile Chico and its surroundings, for example, have warmer average temperatures, less rainfall, but strong winds throughout the year, compared to areas closer to the sea.

Moving south, rainfall and lower temperatures predominate in the fjords and glaciers. The maritime climate maintains the humidity in the ecosystems of this area, where there are hundreds of hectares of dense evergreen forests, which contrast their foliage with the intense white of the ice, composing landscapes impossible to forget.

In Torres del Paine National Park the climate is surprising. The differences in relief mean that in a single day there can be sun, rain, wind and everything in a different order. Whoever visits this wonder of the world should be prepared for everything, temperatures can be warmer in summer and cold, below 0°C, in winter, but that does not ensure a strict rule. Likewise, there is rain all year round and snow can even fall.

Patagonia’s flora and fauna are super adapted to these climatic conditions. Lenga forests thrive on humidity, while coiron bushes resist drought and the strong winds of the steppe, for example. You can see pumas walking through the snow or guanacos grazing in the bushes against the cold air.

To tour Patagonia and enjoy the full range of outdoor activities there are to enjoy, Vertice Travel advises to equip yourself with quality outdoor clothing, with quick-drying materials, breathable, waterproof and useful for warm and low temperatures; so that the weather is not an impediment to go trekking, kayaking, sailing a fjord or camping.

Shoes should also be selected with attention; the humidity on the trails, the cold in navigation or the ice of the glaciers require professional footwear with good grip, comfort for daily use, ideal size to avoid accidents or sprains, correct permeability to prevent the feet from getting wet by the outside water or by the perspiration itself.

The key is to choose garments suitable for all the microclimate alternatives that Patagonia has and to carry them in a light and comfortable luggage to have them always at hand. Accessories such as glasses, hats and gloves are never superfluous.
