Restaurant (excludes Los Perros): We offer full board or half board programs. 50 years of the Paine Massif Circuit: the explorers who opened it return to the emblematic route Vertice Travel

Half a century after having traced it, Óscar Guineo and John Garner return to Torres del Paine Park to relive the circuit, share memories, and transmit a legacy of exploration, friendship, and respect for nature.

In 1976, at just over 20 years old each, the then-young park ranger Óscar Guineo and British mountaineer John Garner undertook an expedition that would forever mark their lives and the history of Torres del Paine National Park. For three months, organized in stages of up to 15 days, they toured the northern sector of the Paine Massif, which until then was believed to be connected to the ice fields. Their goal was clear, although it seemed impossible: to completely surround the massif and open trails where none existed.

At that time, Óscar was part of a group of park rangers in charge of enabling new sectors during a period of full expansion for the Park, thanks to the incorporation of areas that were previously cattle ranches. John, for his part, had arrived alongside a British expedition exploring the Grey Glacier. Enamored with the Park, he managed to stay as a volunteer alongside the park rangers to collaborate in the exploration and opening of trails.

Determined to open this new route, they began the journey on horseback and then continued on foot, navigating ravines, fast-flowing rivers, and dense forests. Although they did not share a language, they managed to understand each other and coordinate to fulfill their objective, understand the true geography of the place, and trace the route they baptized as the Paine Mountain Range Circuit. Over time, this route would come to be known as the Paine Massif Circuit, and popularly as the O Circuit (or simply “the O”), one of the most emblematic treks in the world.

At the end of the expedition, Óscar Guineo took charge of marking the trails they had opened on the map and assigning names to places that until then lacked identity. The highest and most challenging section of the new circuit, located at an altitude of 1,200 meters and from where a spectacular view of the lake and the Grey Glacier can be contemplated, he baptized as John Garner Pass, with the approval of the park’s administration, in tribute to his traveling companion and, since then, an endearing friend.

Fifty years later, Guineo and Garner returned to the park to relive their historic journey, accompanied by family members. This February 26th, they began a trip that allowed them to tour the sectors that they themselves had opened—Dickson, Los Perros, Grey, Paine Grande, and Los Cuernos—and share the story of that first journey with visitors. Accompanying them were Ricardo Guineo, Óscar’s son; Val Garner, John’s wife; and Macarena Santibáñez, porter, alongside the team from Vertice, the company in charge of shelters and campsites in the park, which facilitated logistics and accommodations along the way.

The reunion moved park rangers, workers, and visitors, many of whom were surprised to meet the “creators” of the mythical John Garner Pass right on the route. Jerson Pérez, a Vertice collaborator at the Dickson Refuge & Camping, commented: “It was nice to see the protagonists of what has today become one of the most well-known trails in the region. It pleased me very much to know they were such good friends after living all those adventures”. He also highlighted that the park’s visitors themselves “were also moved by this pleasant surprise; it must have been unexpected for them to run into the very explorers of the John Garner Pass while hiking the trail”.

For his part, Ricardo Guineo, Óscar’s son, pointed out that touring the circuit was, above all, an instance of reflection and remembrance of what life was like in the Park before the creation of the circuit: “It felt nostalgic, because while doing the tour with them on several occasions their comments were ‘Do you remember when…?’, recalling different anecdotes they lived back then. Nothing particularly big or dramatic, but small moments of their daily life. I feel appreciation for all those stories and how all the people back then gave rise to what we have today”. He also emphasized that “my dad’s message has always been one of care and respect for the environment. I have seen him transmit this message throughout his life, both in words and actions, so I think his legacy is not necessarily something material, but rather his perspective on life, which he has shared with a great many people along the way”.

Meanwhile, Paula Hernández, Vertice’s commercial coordinator, highlighted that the company currently reinforces the experience on the Paine Massif Circuit with services oriented towards the well-being of visitors, showing the progress over these 50 years: “In the different sectors, hikers have 30 minutes of free internet daily, unlimited WhatsApp messaging service, offline georeferenced maps to support navigation during the journey, and minimarkets with varied foods and trekking accessories, all with the goal of facilitating a better journey experience”.

In addition to the tour, open talks were organized for the occasion at the different Vertice refuges and campsites, where visitors could listen to stories, ask questions, and share a close space with the protagonists of this epic story, knowing firsthand the accounts and experiences of those who wrote one of the most important pages in the history of Torres del Paine Park.

50 years after its opening, the Paine Massif Circuit remains a symbol of exploration, friendship, and respect for nature. Every trail holds stories of effort, curiosity, and passion, like those of the people who imagined and traced it from scratch: a story of adventure, dedication, and, above all, friendship, which continues to inspire new generations to discover and care for this invaluable treasure of Chilean Patagonia.

Coming to Torres del Paine is a dream come true. But dreams, in order to stay alive, need care. At Vertice, we believe that a true connection with nature is only possible when there is absolute respect for its rules.

We are not the owners of this landscape; we are visitors. That is why we have designed this blog as a roadmap so that your journey through our trails and shelters serves as an example of environmental commitment and risk prevention.

1. Fire: A silent enemy
Making a fire is strictly prohibited in any area of the park. A single spark can destroy decades of ecosystem in minutes.

Where to cook? You can only use camping stoves in the specifically designated areas within our campsites and shelters.
Important, never leave a lit stove unattended and make sure it is on a stable surface.

2. Zero Waste: The challenge of “what comes in, leaves with you”Every wrapper you bring with you has the potential to pollute for centuries.

Take it with you: The basic rule of the responsible hiker is to return with everything they brought. Do not bury trash or leave organic remains (such as fruit peels), as they alter the diet of the local fauna and the decomposition process is slow due to the cold.
Vertice Clean Points: In our sectors, we have clean points. Use them consciously, separating your waste according to the instructions. You can ask our staff about their locations.

3. The Trail is the only path
Going off the marked path seems harmless, but the cumulative effect of thousands of people doing the same is devastating.

Avoid erosion: By walking off the trail, you compact the soil, destroy micro-flora, and create “scars” that rainwater turns into trenches.
Personal safety: Staying on the marked route is your best life insurance. The trails are designed to avoid risk zones.

4. Wildlife: Observe without invading
Seeing a puma, a huemul, or a fox is a privilege that makes your heart race. But remember: you are not in a zoo, you are in their home.

Safe distance: Use your camera’s zoom, not your feet. Getting too close stresses the animals and can alter their hunting or breeding patterns.
Absolute silence: Unnecessary noise scares away the species. The connection with the mountain is best enjoyed in silence.
Do not feed them: Giving food to a wild animal is sentencing it to death. They lose their ability to forage for food on their own and become vulnerable.

A responsible tourist is one who knows their limits. Prevention is the best rescue tool. By taking care of the environment, you ensure that future generations can also feel the awe you feel today in front of the Grey Glacier or the Paine Massif.

Connection with the conditions: As mentioned above, in winter, the mountain makes the rules. Following the instructions of our park rangers and certified guides isn’t a suggestion
— it’s a matter of safety.

Visiting Patagonia means facing nature at its most extreme. The region is famous for its volatility: it is possible to experience all four seasons in a single day. You may start the day with sunshine, move through strong winds, cloud cover, and even hail within a matter of hours.

At Vertice, we believe that an informed traveler is a safe traveler. The key to enjoying and navigating these circuits responsibly lies in a simple but vital strategy: dressing in layers. This system allows you to achieve maximum protection and comfort with the minimum possible weight.

1. Materials and Layers

Your clothing is your first line of defense. It is crucial to avoid cotton, as it does not dry quickly and does not retain body heat during physical activity.

Protection against the elements: It is essential to wear wind-resistant, quick-drying clothing. You must have a waterproof jacket and pants.
Insulation: A fleece jacket (or similar) is indispensable for retaining warmth.
Head and extremities: Do not forget a fleece or wool hat (ideally covering the ears), gloves, and a buff or bandana to protect your neck and face.

2. Footwear

The most common injuries occur due to inadequate footwear. For the park’s uneven terrain, we require:

Trekking boots: They must be waterproof and, very importantly, high-cut to provide support and prevent ankle injuries.
Breaking them in: If you buy new boots, wear them for some time before your trip. Never use them for the first time on the first day of the circuit.
Socks: Wear technical trekking socks.
Tip: Bring blister patches or treatments in your personal first aid kit; they are always very useful.

3. Essential Technical Gear

Your backpack (between 35 and 50 liters for personal items) must contain tools that facilitate your movement and safety:

Stability: Trekking poles and mini crampons.
Visibility: Headlamp with spare batteries.
Sun Protection: The Patagonian sun is strong. Wear sunglasses, a cap or visor, lip balm, and sunscreen rated SPF 30+ or higher.

4. Life at the Refuge and Camping Areas

Upon arriving at our sectors (Grey, Paine Grande, Dickson, Perros), the goal is rest and recovery.

Stay dry: We recommend keeping all your clothing inside dry bags within your backpack. This way, regardless of the day’s rain, you will always have dry clothes for the afternoon.
Comfort: Bring a change of clothes exclusively for staying at the refuge, as well as sandals for showers and downtime.
Hygiene and Safety: Do not forget your quick-drying travel towel, personal toiletries, and a padlock to secure your belongings in the lockers.

5. Health and Hydration

1. Respect Starts Before You Leave: Planning

A common mistake, as outdoor experts point out, is underestimating the route. Improvisation is the number one enemy of safe trekking.

The weather factor: Nature is constantly changing, especially in Patagonia. Always check the forecast hours before setting out. If the weather says “no,” the mountains will still be there tomorrow.
